How a Car Immobilizer Can Help Protect Your Car

It is common today that car thieves could easily “hot wire” cars in order to get them to work without the right key for the car. This makes stealing a car easy to do, but you don’t have to be a victim of this. With a car immobilizer you will be able to protect your car from being hotwired because the electrical parts of your car will be disabled unless the right kind of key is used in your car. A car immobilizer is an electrical device that can help protect your car.

A car immobilizer has been required to be installed in vehicles in the United Kingdom for years, but it is not included in cars sold in the United States or Canada. Therefore, it is important to look for a car immobilizer so that you can be protected.

Here’s how a car immobilizer works. It is fit onto an engine so that it will disable the engine within forty-five seconds after the car is shut off. The car immobilizer will be shut off only when the right car key is used or after the owner enters the secret PIN code to help override the program.

A static code is used in a car key that you use for a car with a car immobilizer. A radio-frequency identification, or RFID, ring will read the static code so that the ignition will be able to recognize the proper key. The engine control unit will need to be checked with the certain key as well. Only a car key with a static code that has the right engine control unit will be able to work in a car with a car immobilizer. This means that the only way that the car will start will be when the specific key is in the ignition.

A jack plug can be used along with your car immobilizer for added security. This is where an additional key must be put into a socket in the dashboard so that the car key with the static code will be able to work. This adds to the protection that you will have for your car.

A car immobilizer can be found at various different auto security stores. You can normally find one for about a hundred dollars or more. While it does cost a good amount of money to get a car immobilizer not only will you save money by not having to put up with trying to get your car back after it is stolen but you will also be able to save money on your car insurance premiums because of the lower risk of your car possibly being stolen. So when you are looking for something to help protect your car be sure to consider a car immobilizer.
